"When you pool together all the combined energy it takes to drive and build a Toyota Prius, the flagship car of energy fanatics, it takes almost 50 percent more energy than a Hummer - the Prius’s arch nemesis."
Ironically, it's the tree-huggers at Greenpeace who discovered much of this.

There was a study done, and its conclusions were that the Prius has a total cost of $325,000 and the Hummer has a cost of $585,000. With the assumption that the Prius will only last 100,000 miles and the Hummer will last 300,000 miles, the Prius does more damage to the earth because the owner constantly has to replace the Prius. However, there are many taxi Priuses with odometer readings greater than 100,000 miles an Toyota says they expect the battery to last the life of the car, so it looking likely that this assumption that a Prius lasts 100,000 miles is just a guess.
